Have you ever heard of the Big Mac Index?
It’s an index that ranks economies and prices around the world. In 2021, Switzerland ranked first at 7.04 USD (*1) !
The U.S. placed fourth at 5.65 USD.
Other European countries are also in the top rankings.

What about Japan?
In Japan, a Big Mac only costs 3.55 USD!
It's not as expensive as one might think.

3. How much do groceries cost per day?

Let’s introduce my daily grocery cost per day.
I live and work in Tokyo.

Breakfast: 100 yen (bread), 100 yen (yogurt) = 200 yen
Lunch: 400 yen (beef rice bowl), 100 yen (salad) = 500 yen
Dinner: 800 yen (ramen)

If I eat out for all three meals, it’ll cost around 1,500 yen per day.

If you consider the fact that ramen can cost 1,725 yen (around 15 USD) in the U.S., this feels incredibly cheap.
Of course, if you cook at home, it’ll be even cheaper.
