Introduction


The well-known organization known as JASSO, which stands for Japan Student Services Organization, assists students who travel to Japan to pursue academic degrees. JASSO provides a wide range of funding options for different student categories each year. Those who have been "accepted by a Japanese university, graduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd grade or upper) or professional training college...under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement on a short-term basis from 8 days to one year between Japanese school and their home higher educational institution outside Japan" are eligible for the JASSO Scholarship, which provides stipends to recipients.



Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-financed International Students


The more popular of the two scholarships offered by JASSO is the one for privately-financed international students, which is awarded based on either self-application or university recommendation at the time of the application. Under this scholarship, recipients who are university students receive a monthly stipend of 48,000 JPY while those who attend Japanese language institutions receive 30,000 JPY. The scholarship is awarded for the duration of either 1 year or 6 months, depending on the enrollment period. Below are the two different enrollment periods.

  • Spring scholarships (enrollment in April): duration of 12 months (From April to March of the following year)

  • Autumn scholarships (enrollment in September/October): duration of 6 months (From October to March of the following year)


* Eligibility:

Every international student is able to apply for this scholarship, regardless of age, school, or major. However, please make sure you meet the following criteria:

  • Must not have received a scholarship from another institution that prohibits plural grants of the Honors Scholarship

  • Must not have received JASSO scholarship for short-term programs

  • Must have a “College student” visa status

  • Must have a written recommendation by the host school

  • Must not have a monthly allowance that exceeds 90,000 JPY provided by family members

  • Must not have a supporter residing in Japan with an annual income greater than 5,000,000 JPY


Application process:

Here is a step-by-step outline of the application process.

1. Scholarship applications will be accepted through schools at the time of their admission application submissions

2. The applicant must apply to the host school to receive a recommendation that will be sent to the JASSO Scholarship committee

3. The applicant must contact the host school to confirm the application procedure.

4. After the screening process, JASSO will notify the host school of the result.

Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan)

Another financial funding program provided by JASSO is the Student Exchange Support Program, which provides 80,000 JPY for short-term international exchange students. In order to reap its benefits, you must remember to apply for this JASSO scholarship at the time you submit your application to your Japanese host school.


  • Duration: 8 days to 12 months

  • Number of scholars: 5,000 (This may subject to change from year to year)


Eligibility:

  • Must have been accepted by a Japanese school under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangements with your home school.

  • Must demonstrate excellent academic performance and personal records at your home school.

  • Must complete your studies at your home school upon the termination of the period of study in Japan

  • Must come from countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan

  • Must be eligible for a ‘Student Visa’.

  • Must not have received more than 80,000 JPY in total from other scholarships towards studying in Japan


Application process:

  • Applications for this JASSO scholarship will be accepted only from Japanese schools.

  • After screening the application documents submitted by the Japanese school, JASSO will decide the programs to support and send notices of the results.
